The Longest Day Ever

We made it! After a long journey across the ocean we found our way to Munich! We left Chicago at 12:30 pm. After a quick stop in Philadelphia we boarded our plane to Munich at 4:30 pm (EST). The airplane trips went pretty smoothly, all things considered. The kids were excited about the TVs in the seats. I was excited that the plane had lots of open space and I could sleep across 2 seats!

We found ourselves at the Munich airport at 6:45 am (Munich time). We were all pretty tired but Team “Naps Are For Babies” rallied all of us to keep going! We found the S bahn and figured out how to get to our new home in Unterfoehring. Thankfully the trip was exciting as the train was a new experience for most of us! We found our house quickly and were reassured that it was great accommodations for the week! A bit smaller than we are used to, but plenty of comfy beds and a TV to watch German cartoons 🙂 There is a lovely park right next door and the kids made fast friends at the playground.

Although Team “Babies” really wanted to take over we decided to find breakfast. A lovely bakery was the perfect thing and we enjoyed a variety of pastries with MezzoMix (a mixture of Cola, orange soda, and caffeine! (I settled for a cappuccino!) – YUM. Loaded up on the caffeine and the sugar we boarded the S-Bahn for Munich.

We took the Marienplatz exit, and climbed the stairs which opened up to the Glockenspiel. We’d like to think we planned this, but serendipitously we arrived at 10:50 am with the famous show beginning at 11:00. The kids loved it!

We continued into Munich searching for the famous Hofbrauhaus. This placed is HUGE! We walked around for a bit beginning to show signs of wear before finding a table. Exhaustion was beginning to set in, but it was nothing that beer, meat, and Coca Cola can’t fix! Prost!IMG_8877

After lunch (dinner? who knows what time it is!?!) we headed back to our new house. We played at the little park for a bit, watched some TV, made fun of one another almost falling asleep….until it wasn’t a joke and someone succumbed to the temptation. I won’t mention any names…..

After a brief rest we tried to wake up poor Samantha – it was rough! With 2 hours to go until 8:00 (We tried to listen Liz Sullivan!) we headed out to find dinner. Guess what? I don’t think anyone in Unterfoehring eats out on Monday night. How do I know this? Because NOTHING is open! We walked, and walked, and walked (ask Katie!) all over but everything was closed. We cut our losses and found some groceries and had pasta and apples for dinner. By this time it was 8:00 – hallelujah! Bedtime and no complaints from anyone!

Final verdict in Babies vs Naps Are For Babies? Really I think we all won!

Many restaurants/gasthauses in Germany are closed on Monday. Head to local grocery store and get stuff. I haven’t been in Germany since 1994, but lots of stuff won’t have changed.
